Dan Cathy is the CEO of Chick-Fl-A. A family owned and operated business. The Cathy family has always had a strong footing in their Christian faith and they have continued to use Christian principles for how they operate their business. I have had the great pleasure of hearing Dan speak publicly on leadership and I have gotten to hang out with him one on one for a day and observe his character and ask him more in-depth questions.
I have a great deal of respect for Dan as I’ve seen him pick up trash around the room as we walked around our church and pushed in chairs that were left out. What seemed to just be natural for him was something that stuck with me. Here I am walking around our church with the CEO of a multi-million dollar company and he is picking up trash and putting things away as we walked around. How many of us who lead from a position without title or glote stop to do the things no one else would ever notice?
On that day I witnessed what true servant leadership is really all about. I was reminded of the verse in Matthew 25:40 which reads “…whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.” The position which Dan leads from, is that of a servant. Doing something most would have chosen to ignore, Dan showed me that no one is ever above serving one another. If you were in Dan’s shoes, would you have done the same thing?
